These days, the spotlight is firmly affixed to the eighth-generation Corvette and its snazzy mid-engine layout. But the C7 Grand Sport still has plenty to say for itself, and a recent project out of Wolfpen in Roswell, Georgia, makes a strong case that the C7 isn’t done yet.
The build started with a simple request. Longtime customer Greg, a 77-year-old track regular, wanted three seconds a lap, and he wanted it without losing his car’s manners on the street. His personal best at Atlanta Motorsports Park already sat at a brisk 1:32.9, so there wasn’t much room for error.
Why The C7 Grand Sport Still Holds Up
The C7 Grand Sport pairs the C7 Z06’s chassis and brakes with the C7 Stingray’s 460 horsepower engine. That combination still works well on a tight, technical track. Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires, sized 285 up front and 335 in the rear, add a substantial amount of grip, and the optional Z07 package also brings carbon-ceramic rotors. That equates to a weight savings of roughly 10 pounds per corner up front and a bit less in the rear.
Unlike the mid-engine C8, the C7 offered a manual transmission on certain trims. Depreciation has also made the C7 Grand Sport more affordable than ever, which turns it into a strong candidate for performance upgrades as well as simply a used-car bargain.
Chasing A Sub-1:30 Lap With A Coilover Setup
Before any parts came off the car, the Wolfpen team ran a baseline. After several attempts, that lap came in at a low 1:33, which gave them a clear number to chase.

Back at the shop, the real obstacle became clear. The C7’s transverse leaf springs sit beneath the car and bolt to the lower control arms, which means the factory setup leaves very few aftermarket tuning options. So the team sourced a single-adjustable Penske coilover kit through GSpeed in Texas. It came with remote reservoirs and 700-pound springs. AMT Motorsport supplied a camber kit for repeatable, non-slipping adjustment. Finally, upper control arm studs and rear toe arms added extra range.
While the suspension was apart, the crew also found metal shavings on Greg’s differential drain plug. As a result, they swapped in a new GM electronic limited-slip differential. Technician Gabe, who usually works on Porsches, fabricated custom mounts for the remote reservoirs and added helper springs the kit didn’t originally include.
Results That Back Up The C7 Grand Sport’s Case
With the new hardware installed, the team dialed in the Corvette’s alignment. The target was 2.5 degrees of negative camber up front and 1.8 degrees in the rear. The finished car weighed in at 3,405 pounds on the shop scale.

Back at Atlanta Motorsports Park, an early lap that wasn’t even a max effort still produced a 1:32.5. The car looked to be on pace for the high 1:29s. But traffic forced a lift before the lap could count. A follow-up attempt still landed a clean 1:30.9 before the session ended.
Even so, the team believes this C7 Grand Sport has a sub-1:30 lap in it. For context, the same driver had previously turned a 1:31.5 in a manual Porsche 992.2 GT3 on street tires. In other words, a properly sorted C7 Grand Sport can approach GT3-level pace at a small fraction of the cost. That kind of value is exactly why the C7, even with the C8 stealing headlines, still belongs in the conversation.
