Here’s a bit of fluffy, yet interesting Corvette news bouncing around the interwebs this morning. Before Kim Kardashian, social media and YouTube, there was Angelyne, a pioneer in the now common phenomena,”famous for being famous.”
She didn’t have the relative ease and reach of the internet back in 70’s, so she employed billboards and plastered her image all over Los Angeles to create her mysterious persona.
No one knew who she was and why they kept seeing her all over town. Rumor had it she was an eccentric, married to a weathly man who bankrolled her campaign. Other theories speculated she paid for it herself. She got a lot of buzz, but it never really translated in to any other notable gigs, and eventually she became a faded, but still famous figure around Tinseltown.
Aside from her signature blonde hair and hourglass figure, the pink Corvette is a key part of her iconic image. Because Chevrolet doesn’t make a pink Corvette, Angelyne enlists the skills of a local paint shop to customize her ride to her favorite hue.
She usually keeps a ‘Vette for about 4 years and when she’s done, she “deconsecrates” it by removing fuzzy seat covers and other doilies, then repainting the car back to original color.
LA Magazine says Angeline is trading up to new Vette and this time, her old car might be available as she customized it.
So, if you’ve been lusting over a pink Corvette with a celebrity backstory, your ship has just come it. What this means for resale value is unclear, but her notoriety definitely elevates her car above the average, run of the mill used Corvette.
In the meantime, here’s a look back at Angelyne and a couple of her hot pink ‘Vettes.
