Why does nitrous always seem to be the bad guy? Thanks to movies and video games, nitrous seems to have caught a bad reputation from the general public and main stream media, and now Police in Tulsa, Oklahoma are blaming a wreck involving a 4th Gen Camaro that occurred last weekend on the “Big Blue Bottle.”
According to the original story reported by Tulsa’s Channel 6 News, titled “Nitrous-Fueled Drag Race Ends In Tulsa Wreck”, witnesses reported that they saw the red Camaro street racing when the car lost control and slid off the road, wiping out a few road signs, a bus bench, and a light pole. Tulsa Police Sergeant Gary Otterstrom opined, “Apparently the vehicle is equipped with nitrous oxide. That may have played a part in this vehicle losing control and running off the road.” The driver fled the scene and witnesses were unable to give police a description. No injuries were reported.
Why is it so easy for everyone to blame this wreck on nitrous? No doubt about it, spray should be respected and only used at a track, but let’s place the blame where it belongs; on immature drivers who do stupid things behind the wheel. The fact that the car was equipped with nitrous doesn’t seem to be enough evidence to place the blame on it. It should also be pointed out that the nitrous system actually stayed completely intact after this violent wreck, and didn’t instantly explode into a ball of fire as many movies and video games make us believe it would.
