Because classic Camaros are so strongly associated with straight-line speed, we sometimes forget that the nameplate has a rich road-racing heritage, too. Of course, the new Camaro is a world-class race car, able to compete with the best European and Japanese competitors can throw at them. And lets not forget the vicious challenge put up by cross-town rivals, Chrysler and Ford. The Camaro certainly has its work cut out for it, but we think it is up to the challenge.

One of these purpose-built race cars is under construction by Momentum Autosports, who have created a build thread on Camaro5 so you can follow along as they piece together a pair of Camaro GTS.Rs.

The World Challenge GTS category, or Grand Touring Sport class, is a recently added division that features many of the same eligible cars from GT (where the Cadillac CTS-V is racing) but with a preparation level closer to “stock” cars. That means Momentum is sticking with the stock LS3 engine (with, of course, the allowable modifications.) But the car is in large part the stock body of a 2011 Camaro, albeit with a roll cage and racing steering wheel.

That’s where Momentum last left off on their own blog and the Camaro thread, as well as with some tantalizing pictures of the custom design front fascia that will substantially improve the aerodynamics for this wicked racer. We’re sure they are busy building this car, but we still can’t wait to get some sort of update. The opening race in St. Petersberg, Florida is only three weeks and a few days away, so we won’t have long to wait to see it on the track in any case.
