Video: Camaro and BMW Collide Mid-Drift, Crowd Goes Wild

As a newer form of organized motorsport, drifting has gone through the growing pains of being dismissed as childish and not serious racing. But as the crowds grow larger and the teams get more organized, drifting has blossomed into a full-on racing phenomenon. Yet there still persists that feeling that drifting is easier than it looks.

The delicate dance between driving sideways and losing control is beyond most drivers’ abilities…and even the best are known to muck up now and then. Bangshift came across this video from the recent Formula Drift event in New Jersey, where a Camaro SS racing against a BMW M3 hits the wall with a most awesome crunch.

Formula Drift follows a simple racing methodology; the two drivers take turns being the “lead car”, with the other driver attempting to keep up and replicate what the lead car is doing. The drivers are then scored for accuracy, speed, and style, rather than who crosses the finish line first. Because of this, professional drifters have to really push their cars as close to the wall as they can, in the hopes that the opponent won’t be able to keep up.

Unfortunately for Tyler McQuarrie, his battle against a BMW M3 went all the way wrong when, as lead car, he bumped a tire wall with his back end. His competitor in the BMW followed him into the wall, and the two drift cars ended up in a rather nasty collision. The drivers were OK, though we’re sure those cars needed a good bit of work to get back on the track. And of course, the crowd goes wild. Check out another angle of the accident down below.
