100 years ago, there was no such thing as a seat belt or roll cage to keep you from flying out of your high speed race car. As a result many people died after being ejected from their car during a racing rollovers, their bodies violently hurled onto (or completely clear of) the race track. Thankfully modern technology has progressed to the point where race car drivers are often impervious to even the most violent of collisions and rollovers.
It wasn’t luck that saved Alex Van ‘t Hoff, who is shown in this video found by Carscoop flipping over three times at a Dutch GT4 race. It was modern roll cage and restraint technology that allowed Van ‘t Hoff to walk away from this horrific accident.
The video picks up just as Van ‘t Hoff’s Camaro is sliding sideways down the slick track during the Pinkterraces at Zandvoort race. According to the video, Van ‘t Hoff was hit from behind (probably by that dastardly Porsche) which sent him spinning around into the nearby wall. His back end caught the guardrail itself, sending the GT4 Camaro hurtling into the air.
We don’t know how fast the racers were going in this part of the track, but it was fast enough for the Camaro to flip over a total of three times before landing on its roof, after going butt-first into the wall. So there was probably some serious speed involved. Thanks to modern safety technology though, Van ‘t Hoff was able to walk away from this serious accident uninjured. Let’s hear it for rollcages, seatbelts, and the fast Camaros that make them necessary.
