With 580 horsepower, Magnetic Ride Control, and a suite of racing technologies designed to deliver maximum performance, the Camaro ZL1 is a wickedly awesome racing machine. At the end of the day though, it’s still just a machine, and is only as good as the driver at the helm. But even the best drivers have bad days, and accidents are a constant risk; the key is to not panic.

This dashcam video from (of all things) a 12-second Volvo shows what can happen when a driver loses control but stays calm behind the wheel of the Camaro ZL1. That was a close one alright, but it definitely goes down as one of the best dragstrip saves we’ve seen.

According to the brief video synopsis, the Camaro was running on bias-ply drag tires, which are usually pretty good at hooking up, but not so great for regaining lateral stability, once lost. This ZL1 was serious about running a fast time, and we’re not exactly sure what went wrong as the Camaro disappears behind the Volvo’s A-pillar just as things get hairy and the ZL1 suddenly shoots to the left.

It looks like everything is about to go upside down on the supercharged Camaro, and then it suddenly changes direction and crosses into the Volvo’s lane going sideways. Had either car done anything different, this video could have ended very poorly for all involved. As it is though, the Volvo driver is quick on the brakes and manages to come to a controlled stop just feet from the Camaro, which amazingly seems to avoid any damage, save a scuff on the rear bumper.

Maybe our editor Paul Huizenga is right when he says there’s an untapped market for dashcams in America…
