Video: Consider Disabling OnStar Before you go Drag Racing

American muscle has enjoyed quite the renaissance in the last five years. A perfect example of this is the world-beating performance of the all-new Chevy Camaro, a model that was discontinued between 2002 and 2008.

The latest Camaro SS features a 455 horsepower LT1 V8 capable of sending it down the ‘quarter in under 13 seconds. For some guys, however, too much power is never enough. The team at Henderson Performance are some of those guys. They managed to extract a staggering 1,500 horsepower from the trusty small-block.

Making the Bowtie Crowd Proud

What else do you do with a 1,500-horse Camaro but visit the drag strip? Camaros have been staging up for high-speed passes at the strip since 1967. In that time, they’ve proven more than a match for some of the fastest Mustangs, Chargers, Challengers, and even the vintage Chevy big-block cars like Chevelles and older Corvettes.

Chevrolet has equipped the modern Camaro with a slew of upgrades compared to its 60s predecessors. Six speeds, independent suspension, grippy modern tires and half a century of engine development are among some of the more prominent improvements. But there’s one feature available on new Camaros that might not be suited so well for trips to the Saturday night drags. It’s called OnStar.

OnStar Emergency at your Service

If you’re not familiar with OnStar, it is a free service designed to assist Chevy drivers in a pinch. If you’re lost or need roadside help, you can simply press the OnStar button and an integrated phone will put you in contact with an OnStar representative that can help resolve your issue.

One of OnStar’s best tricks is its ability to summon help automatically if motion sensors in the vehicle indicate you’ve been in an accident.

That’s a great safety feature—except for when your 1,500-horsepower track-special fires its recovery parachute and triggers a call from the friendly OnStar rep. Thanks, but no thanks OnStar. Henderson Performance may want to disconnect the system on their next build—then again with so much power under the hood, maybe it’s best that they don’t!
