Never judge a book by its cover. It’s an adage many of us live by, and it’s something that every drag racer should know. A ‘strip stomper can come in every shape and form – everything from a FWD Honda to a farm truck. Only fools let their guard down when they approach that Christmas tree.
We recently received a submission from our friends over at High Tech Corvette about this record breaking, and setting, 2009 Cadillac CTS-V. This isn’t your “average” 12 second Cadillac, either. The entire powertrain has been made over with a 416 cubic inch stroker LSA with 9.5:1 compression stuffed with Callies and Wiseco internals, and a G-Force camshaft.
The heads have been replaced with WCCH Stage 2 castings with Manton pushrods, Morel lifters, and Harland Sharp trunion-upgraded LSA rockers. Forcing air into the intake chambers is a G-Force 102 MM 2.3L supercharger, Big Mouth cold-air intake, and a NW 102 MM throttle body.
Not being satisfied with just a blower, the car’s owner, Josh Phelps, decided that a Nitrous Outlet spray bar kit hidden inside the blower could always help the cause. It has, with the Caddy running a best pass of 9.44 at 149.03 in the quarter mile – enough to be the fastest CTS-V in the country.
Keeping this beast together without exploding its drivetrain all over the track is a Circle D-fortified 6L90E , backed by a carbon fiber driveshaft, and amazingly, the OEM, stock stall speed converter.
Phelps commissioned Mike Whitehouse of G-Force MotorSports to build the car, and judging by the results, they’ve done an amazing job! Oh, and in case you’re wondering, this V put down a stout 800 RWHP on boost alone, and a very healthy 1,100 RWHP “depending on the tune up,” as Whitehouse tells us. The total package doesn’t fail to impress. So just remember this car the next time a four door CTS pulls up next to you at the tree.
