Video: Hennessy 2016 Camaro SS Goes 202 mph in Testing

Last month, Hennessy’s 2016 Camaro SS stormed to a top speed of 202.1 mph and in the process, became the first 6th Gen Camaro to break the 200 mph mark.

The run was made on the 8.5-mile high-speed oval at the Continental Tire Proving Grounds located in Uvalde, Texas and the effort was validated with a Racelogic VBox 3i GPS data-logging system.

“Among all the makes and models of cars we work with, it certainly seemed natural to take the latest 2016 Camaro SS and try to push the boundaries of its performance,” John Hennessy told us. “In this case, we felt like breaking 200 mph would be a great way to validate the car’s performance-upgrade program,” he further commented.

The team from Hennessey Performance (HPE) increased the 6.2-liter LT1 engine’s output from 455 to 750 horsepower by starting with its HPE600 naturally-aspirated engine upgrade. These cars are fitted with CNC-ported LT1 cylinder heads, as well as camshaft and valvetrain upgrades,

Also added were Kooks 1 7/8-inch long-tube stainless-steel headers with high-flow catalytic converters, and a high-flow intake manifold. Combined with engine-management recalibration and chassis-dyno tuning, the resulting power increased to 605 horsepower at 6,500 rpm. A nitrous-oxide kit from Nitrous Outlet was added to increase power by another 146 horsepower. The net combination provided 751 horsepower at the flywheel which equated to 649 rwhp on HPE’s Dynojet chassis dyno.

The 751 horsepower is made at 6,500 rpm and the 643 lb.-ft. of torque comes in at 3,800 rpm. Besides that 202-mph top-end, the supercharged Hennessy Camaro also sprinted to 60 mph in 3.1 seconds and blitzed the 1,320 in 10.7 seconds at 129 mph.

Hennessey's 2016 super Camaro SS cracks 200 with ease.

Additional goodies in the quest for 200 included suspension pieces from Chevrolet Performance Parts which works in conjunction with the factory magnetic-ride suspension and lightweight 20-inch Hennessey H10 wheels (20×9.5 inches front and 20×10.5 inches rear). They are shod with Continental ContiSportContact 5P tires, sized 255/40ZR20 front and 295/35ZR20 rear.

Hennessey Performance now also offers its HPE750 Supercharged engine upgrade which delivers the same power level without needing to refill a nitrous bottle. Both packages are currently available from HPE and production will be limited to 100 units each of the nitrous and supercharged cars for the 2016 model year.

As for the supercharged setup, it includes a TVS2300 supercharger system running 7 psi boost, the Kooks headers, and a similar exhaust system.

The cylinder-head updates are part of both the HPE600 and HPE750 cars and include CNC porting work, a competition valve job, extensive flow testing, and chambers milled to the desired size. The heads are also treated to lightweight hollow-stem intake and exhaust valves, heavy-duty pushrods and dual valve springs, titanium retainers, and machined locators and locks. The chamber volumes are measured and adjusted for the desired compression ratio. An HPE cam and updated lifters are also in the mix. The CNC port work is also hand-blended with the valve job, and spring pressures are measured and adjusted for the cam.

Once it’s all back together, HPE electronic tuning commences, the car is (before and after) dyno tested, and those results are supplied with each car. Pricing starts at $63,950 USD including the base car with the 1SS package.

“We are very excited about the incredible GM cars like this new Camaro, the C7 Corvettes, the LT4-powered Cadillac CTS-V, and the LS3-powered Chevrolet SS that are being built today,” said John Hennessey. “All four of these cars can be easily upgraded to meet or exceed some of the fastest exotics from Europe.”

We’ll certainly make a toast to that.
