During the Spring installment of the Goodguys Del Mar event, Chad Reynolds took time to interview James Shipka and Mary Pozzi about the Optima Batteries One Lap Camaro for showthedrive on YouTube. It is hard to believe that this magnificent machine started off as $2,500 6-cylinder car purchased on eBay. Shipka told Reynolds that you get what you pay for on eBay; every panel aside from the roof and rocker panels have been replaced on the car. This car was destined to compete in the grueling One Lap of America competition four weeks from the Goodguys event. One Lap is loosely based on the Cannonball Run, which involves a 3500-4500 mile drive with subsequent stops at various autocross courses, road courses or drag strips that are guaranteed to test the durability of any vehicle.
Shipka wanted to utilize modern technology on this classic Camaro to enhance the entire car. While the body may appear to be just another first generation the Camaro with a killer paint job and wheels, this beast is powered by 2008 Corvette engine. A Speedtech American Specialties coil over conversion along with Ridetech shocks in the front and rear help the One Lap Camaro tear up the track. Components like the Lateral Dynamics 3-Link system and a Ford 9-inch rearend with a Currie center section, give viewers an idea of the high-end aftermarket parts used to create a competitive car. Both the front and rear brakes are the same size and utilize the same Baer 6-piston calipers; this was done to simplify the repair process if something were to go wrong on the road along with eliminating the need to carry multiple spare parts during One Lap competition.
