“Not sure if you guys are interested, but we have a sequel to our twin-turbo 2016 Camaro project as featured here.”
That was the opening greeting from Howard Tanner, who is the president of Pompano Beach, Florida’s Redline Motorsports, about its current shop project, a 2106 Camaro SS. Of course, it’s powered by the Bowtie’s latest salvo-over-the-bow of Dearborn in the form of its 6.2-liter LT1 Gen-V engine that makes 455 horsepower in stock form.
Are we interested? A car that hasn’t even been on the market for a full year and RM has already got one essentially making close to 1,000 horsepower at the flywheel? Yes, we are interested and figured you would be, too.
Howard further explained that, “The car has now been fitted with one of our direct-injected 427-cubic-inch engines and just smacked down an easy 830 horsepower to the rear wheels. This was through the car’s eight-speed automatic and with a mild 11 psi. of boost. We eventually plan on running close to 18 psi.”
It is impressive to say the least and, yes, it is equipped with direct injection as are all new Gen-5 LT1 and LT4 powerplants.
Real quickly, direct injection means the fuel injectors squirt the fuel directly into the combustion chamber and cylinder. To do so, the LT1’s injectors are thusly mounted in the cylinder heads. With standard port fuel-injection such as in an LS3 and all other LS-series engines, the injectors are mounted in the intake manifold, fuel is introduced into the intake manifold and, in turn, before the intake valve, which is a less efficient way of mixing in fuel.
Redline has taken the car to the track for the first round of testing. As the above video shows and with transmission shifting issues in the eight-speed automatic, the car still ran a 10.20 at 146.8 mph. Certainly the nearly 150-mph trap speed gives an indication of how quick the car will be when it’s more sorted out and more track testing is done.
When Redline gets to further tuning and testing, we’ll be the first to report the results from the cutting-edge GM LS and LT tuning shop.
