When Matt Happel headed to Maple Grove Raceway this past weekend, he had just one thing on his mind – a single digit quarter mile pass. If you’ve been following our features on Happel’s sleeper 4-Door Ford Fairmont, then you’ll understand just how huge of an accomplishment a 9-second pass really is. The Fairmont is powered by a bone-yard 5.3L LS long block with a ZR1 cam, a big turbo, and a big shot of nitrous. The Fairmont is absolutely a budget LS powered terror, and only cost around $5,000 to initially build. Happel tells us with its current combo the Fairmont could run in the low 10s consistently all day long, but no one that close to the single digits could leave well enough alone.
With the boost turned up to 20 PSI and the nitrous set on “kill”, Happel hooked up the M/T ET Streets and clipped a 1.6 60-foot on his way to an ET of 9.95 at 140 MPH. “I drove the Fairmont all the way out to Maple Grove, and made three consecutive low 10-second passes. It wasn’t looking like a 9-second pass was going to happen, then I finally got the car to leave right on that last run and got the 9.95. I was happy with that so we packed it up and went home.”
Next up for the Fairmont? Personally, we’d love to see some suspension work to really bring out the real potential of this beast. (…and of course a proper roll cage…) Check out the videos of the 9-second run above and below.
