Henry Ford was quoted as saying, “If I gave the people what they wanted, I’d have given them a faster horse!” Whether or not a faster horse would have been an appropriate answer back then is up for question, but thankfully, technology HAS moved on since the days of saddles and horseshoes.
While some may still prefer their horses to wear carburetors instead of modern fuel injection, the strides that have given us unprecedented horsepower numbers with amazing drivability characteristics is thanks to electronically controlling our fuel. Refinements and better control of our fuels has also allowed us to implement other power adders, such as supercharging to net even more gains from our engine.
A perfect example of this is found in this video by Wegner Automotive. The star of this short vid is a Wegner-built 376ci LS3 with a 2.9L Whipple supercharger. The 2.9L Whipple Supercharger pushes enough air to pump out over 1,000 horsepower through this late-model Chevy engine. Wegner Automotive also offers the 3.0L Whipple supercharger on 416 or 427 cubic-inch engines for the most rabid of enthusiasts.
Underneath that Whipple huffer is a 376ci (6.2L) GM block with a forged LT4 crank and rods wearing Mahle forged pistons on the opposing ends. A pair of Wegner Motorsports-ported LS3 heads cap off each bore and a set of great looking two-piece valve covers hide the coil packs often seen atop these engines for a much cleaner look. An eight-rib belt drives the supercharger and a Holley drive-by-wire ECU drives the 90mm throttle body and 95lb/hr. fuel injectors to keep all the fuel trims teetering between peak power and safety.
While most enthusiasts will always have a soft spot for a carbed hotrod touting a lumpy camshaft, it’s hard to argue with a 1,000-horsepower beast that eats up stop and go traffic as well as any quarter mile encounter. Thanks to the Ls-engine’s constant evolution and thoughtful addition of aftermarket add-ons such as the Whipple supercharger and Holley ECU, we can now enjoy power levels like never before. Check out this video and just imagine what all those ponies could do for YOUR favorite ride!
