Back when America was first founded, state and Federal lotteries were used in lieu of income tax as a means for funding public works projects. These days legalized gambling has become privatized to an enormous extent, with casinos and lotteries in almost every state. While big cash prizes draw the big crowds, many casinos also offer shiny new cars as a means to tempt customers into spending just a few more bucks.
But no one ever wins those cars…right? Well the Dickinson Press reports that a South Dakota woman, after pulling the arm of the slot machine just once, won her choice of either a brand new 2013 Chevy Camaro, or a $16,000 cash option. Can you guess which one she choose?
Kathy Long went to the Four Aces Casino in famed Deadwood, South Dakota and sat down at her first machine, putting in two bucks. After just one pull, the machine “went crazy” in announcing that she had just hit the jackpot. People crowded around and congratulated her after she told her husband that she thought she had just won a car.
The casino actually gave her a choice between what looks like a base-model Camaro V6, and $16,000 cash. Even after figuring in for taxes and whatnot, the used value of that Camaro was probably way more than the $16,000. But with two new cars already, Kathy and her family decided to take the money and run. We can’t really say we blame her, but would you have done the same?
