Last week GM’s Australian subsidiary Holden unveiled the next generation of its large, rear-wheel drive Commodore series of sedans. The new Commodore VF is sleeker and more stylish than its muscular predecessor. In keeping with its performance traditions though, a large V8 engine is still an available (and popular) option, and the Commodore VF has also made its track debut.
Just a day after revealing the street version of the Commodore VF, Holden dropped this brief video showcasing an Australian Supercar Series version of the new Commodore. This video hints at the styling of more extreme performance variants, such as the anticipated Commodore SS V.
The Australian Supercar Series is sort of the Oz version of NASCAR (or at least how stock car racing used to be, before all the stock got taken out), being incredibly popular whilst using production models as a basis for competing vehicles. But while the production Commodore will get a 6.2 liter V8 engine, the Supercar Series version gets a 5.0 liter engine making 650 horsepower.
The Supercar Series version of the Commodore bears a lot of resemblance to what we think the 2014 Chevy SS performance sedan will look like as well. It will eschew the softer lines of the garden variety Commodore for a more brutal, muscular look to intimidate opponents on the racetrack. Described as a four-door Corvette, will the Chevy SS borrow its design elements from the Holden race car? We’ll find out at the end of this week.
