The all-motor Chevy SS record has officially been reset, and it did not take a radical combination to make it happen. Phillip Thompson’s Chevrolet SS has claimed the quickest naturally aspirated quarter-mile pass for the platform, eclipsing a record that had stood untouched since 2021. The achievement reinforces just how capable the SS chassis and LS3 platform remain when the right combination of parts, tuning, and execution comes together.

A Stock Foundation With Smart Upgrades

What makes this new Chevy SS record especially notable is how much of the car remains factory original. Under the hood sits the stock bottom-end LS3, paired with the factory 6L80 automatic transmission. The stock two-piece driveshaft, stock fuel tank, stock 3.27 rear gear, stock axles, and even the stock front suspension are all still in place. Impressively, the car also retains fully functioning air conditioning, reinforcing that this Chevy SS is still a true street-oriented combination.

The key upgrades focused on where they matter most for an all-motor setup. Gwatney Performance Innovation supplied the heads and cam package that allowed the LS3 to breathe efficiently at high rpm, while Circle D Specialties delivered a properly matched torque converter to maximize acceleration without sacrificing reliability. The result is a combination that works within factory limits while extracting every bit of available performance.

Team Effort Behind The Record

Behind the scenes, this Chevy SS record was the product of a well-coordinated team effort. Phillip Thompson owns the car, with Branden Pomerleau handling the build and Matt Russell responsible for dialing in the tune. Their work pushed the SS beyond the previous naturally aspirated benchmark of 10.47 seconds, which had been set by Johnny Smith and held for several seasons.

They believe that there is still significant potential for improvement. Even without stepping into a sleeved block or major drivetrain changes, further refinement could push this Chevy SS even deeper into record territory.
