Sad news today, as we learn that Corvette mecca Mid America Motorworks has been devastated by a powerful Tornado. Severe storms ripped through the communities of Effingham, Teutopolis, Blue Mound, and Charleston, Illinois, yesterday, and, according to Mid America Motorworks founder Mike Yager, the facility suffered a direct hit. Everything, from the company’s inventory to historic artifacts like the last C4, the historic C5 Alpha and Beta prototypes, and the CERV4b, is destroyed or badly damaged.

The good news is that the storms hit the campus when no one was present, so every member of the staff is safe and unharmed. But unfortunately, the material loss was substantial. According to Mike, everything is a total loss, from the company’s MY Garage Museum to its 1910 gas station and preserved outdoor sign collection. He says the firm’s current focus is making sure its staff keeps getting paychecks and personally reaching out to suppliers, partners, and friends who have supported the company throughout its 52 year existence.
In addition to being one of the most influential entities in the Corvette aftermarket, Mid America Motorworks is deeply embedded in Corvette culture and has used its clout and influence to preserve many priceless artifacts. In so many ways, Mid America Motorworks is an operation that supports the entire Corvette ownership experience, from restoration and maintenance to preservation and enthusiast gatherings. One of the company’s biggest gatherings is Corvette Funfest, held annually since 1994. In its 30-plus years of operation, Corvette Funfest has attracted thousands of Corvette owners from around the country and become one of the largest Corvette gatherings outside of Bowling Green and Carlisle.

Mid America Motorworks grew from a small Corvette parts business that was started with a $500 loan into one of the largest suppliers of Corvette restoration, performance, and accessory parts in the world. Mike Yager, the founder of Mid America Motorworks, has been inducted into the National Corvette Museum Hall of Fame. He has also helped launch initiatives like “Drive Your Corvette to Work Day,” and spent decades promoting our hobby.
For Corvette enthusiasts, this loss extends far beyond buildings, inventory, and memorabilia. But if there is one thing Corvette enthusiasts understand, it’s resilience. Mike Yager built Mid America Motorworks into one of the most recognizable names in the hobby. While the damage appears catastrophic, the people who made the company what it is remain safe, and that is what matters most. The company’s immediate path will undoubtedly be difficult, but if the past 52 years have proven anything, it’s that the passion behind Mid America Motorworks is far stronger than any storm.
