Swapping a manual transmission into a classic vehicle completely transforms the driving experience. Sadly, the third pedal is slowly vanishing from the modern automotive landscape. When building Project Swedish Meatball, our 1994 Volvo 940 wagon, we knew an automatic simply would not cut it behind the new turbocharged LS engine. Executing a proper six-speed swap requires careful planning and the right components, which is exactly why we teamed up with the drivetrain experts at Silver Sport Transmissions.

Measuring And Preparing The Transmission Tunnel
Dropping a massive modern gearbox into a chassis that never originally housed one is guaranteed to present clearance issues. You must crawl under the car and take precise measurements of the transmission tunnel, crossmember location and shifter position before ordering any parts. For our Volvo, the factory sheet metal was slightly too tight to accommodate the new bellhousing. A few strategic hits with a heavy sledgehammer massaged the floorboards and firewall just enough to provide the necessary breathing room.

Components Of A Proper Six-Speed Swap
Silver Sport Transmissions strongly advises against piecing together random junkyard parts. We opted for a complete package centered around the legendary TREMEC Magnum F transmission. This specific unit utilizes a close-ratio gearset and is officially rated to handle up to 700 lb./ft. of torque. To couple the mighty LS engine to the new Magnum F, we selected a McLeod Racing RXT Street Twin clutch kit featuring a billet steel flywheel. This twin-disc setup easily holds 800 horsepower while maintaining a soft, street-friendly pedal feel.

Fabricating A Custom Mount
Because aftermarket support for LS-swapped Volvo 940s is relatively slim, a direct-fit transmission crossmember does not exist. The fabrication crew at Big 3 Racing had to build a custom mount from scratch. They bolted the transmission to the engine, determined the correct driveline angle, and fabricated a tubular crossmember that bolts directly to the factory chassis mounting points.

Solving The Clutch Pedal Problem
The United States market never received a manual Volvo 940, meaning a factory clutch pedal box was impossible to source. Big 3 Racing solved this major hurdle by installing a Wilwood reverse swing-style clutch pedal assembly. This clever design mounts the master cylinder securely up under the dashboard instead of cluttering the engine bay firewall.

Why Having Partners Are Important
Taking a vehicle from an automatic commuter to a rowdy manual machine is incredibly rewarding. Partnering with companies like Silver Sport Transmissions takes the guesswork out of the equation and provides all the hardware needed for success. Doing the necessary research and measuring twice guarantees your proper six-speed swap will deliver miles of gear-banging smiles.
