It’s more than just conjecture that the next-generation Camaro will share the same Alpha platform as the current Cadillac ATS, and will almost certainly have some of the same powertrain options present. In addition to the LFX V6 that can also be found in the 5th Gen Camaro, the ATS has two available four cylinder powerplants – a generally uninteresting 2.5 liter naturally aspirated mill producing 202 horsepower as measured at the brochure, and the far more intriguing 2.0 turbo, rated at 272 horsepower and a whopping 295 pound-feet for the 2015 model year.
What would you think of a 300-horsepower turbocharged four cylinder Camaro sending power to all four corners? The fact that GM took the 2.0T from its previous 265 peak torque number to 295 with no serious changes to the engine itself hints at the potential waiting to be unlocked through thoughtful tuning of this turbocharged powerplant, and Diablosport has taken advantage of that potential with their Trinity and inTune programmers for the ATS. Diablosport is claiming gains of 50 horsepower and 60 pound-feet to the tires with their 93 octane tune, and a still-respectable 40 horses and 50 pound-feet when using CCG (California Crap Gas) and their 91 octane tune.
So what does this mean for the future Camaro? Well, if Chevy offers the 6th gen with the 2.0T to go head to head with the 2015 EcoBoost Mustang, the Camaro will have an instant power advantage over the rival turbo four cylinder pony car with nothing more than a tune. Will that be enough to maintain parity in the Ford vs. Chevy arms race? Hard to say, but the Alpha platform has one more trick up its sleeve – an available all-wheel-drive layout. What would you think of a 300-horsepower turbocharged four cylinder Camaro sending power to all four corners?
