In Depth with an 1,100 Horsepower Turbo LSX Drift BR-Z

You may recall Weapons Grade Performance’s BRZ06, a street-driven Subaru with LS-2 power, and you might have seen Vorshlag’s “Alpha Project” to prototype an LS swap kit for the Toyobaru siblings. But what you haven’t seen is this – Dai Yoshihara’s Falken-sponsored drift Subaru, nicknamed “the Fabulous Flog.”

Our friends at MotoIQ took a deep dive into this max-effort drift car, and we have to say that the powerplant is one of the most impressive LS builds we’ve ever seen.

GM’s bread-and-butter V8 has become the de-facto standard for power in drift competition because it’s possible to build a powerful, torquey, lightweight engine on a budget if need be. But this is no junkyard LS – the Flog has a tall deck RHS LS block at its heart, displacing 477 cubic inches and running 10:1 compression, force-fed by a Garrett GTX50R turbocharger.

With the wick turned up, the combination is worth an estimated 1,100 horsepower at a measly 9 PSI , but the team typically runs the car on even lower boost and relies on the strength of the LS “on the motor” to produce the lion’s share of the 800-plus horsepower you need to be competitive in Formula D.
