Who would have thought just a few years ago that you would have the potential opportunity to buy a brand new COPO Camaro? Probably nobody. Prior to the official release of the “new Camaro,” most enthusiasts had felt that the glory days of General Motors marketing performance vehicles strictly for the dragstrip had been long gone.

But history has a weird way of repeating itself, and for the last year or so, a limited group of individuals have been lucky enough to get that call from Dr. Jamie Meyer. To get that call, you have to first order a COPO, with the help of your local dealership, through Chevrolet Performance.
The COPO is not street legal – so you don’t buy it like you would any other car, and as such, you have to pick it up yourself from the Oxford, Michigan assembly facility where each example is hand-built. Sixty-nine examples are assembled each year, and there’s quite a selective process to go through in order to get approved.
The man who ordered Number 53 is George Lyons, long-time Camaro fan, and a very patient car enthusiast who made the trek from Erie, Pennsylvania to Oxford with his Chevy Suburban and trailer in tow. The way he tells it on Chevrolet’s Block, he couldn’t sleep at all the night before – who would be able to?
He left his hotel an extra hour early just to be sure he was able to find the location that day, and obviously, out of excitement for his new toy. He was given the grand tour by Cliff Cohen, one of the main people putting the whole deal together in the first place.
With the tour over, Cohen took Lyons for a test drive in Number 53, concluding with a celebratory burnout. Then it was Lyons’ turn, and he celebrated in a similar fashion. How else are you supposed to break in a brand new Camaro drag car, anyway?
