There’s a particular kind of heartbreak reserved for car guys — the kind that hits when the machine you’ve wanted your entire life turns on you. Bradley Berry knows that feeling intimately. He also knows what happens when you refuse to let it win.
A Childhood Promise, Finally Kept
Bradley Berry has spent his career making other people’s cars look perfect. As a professional body and paint man running his own shop in Jefferson, Georgia, he’s built a reputation on precision and developing the kind of eye that notices a quarter-panel gap most people would never catch. But long before he was fixing other people’s rides, he was a kid with one very specific dream: a Corvette.

Not just any Corvette, either. Berry held out, and the wait paid off. He landed a 2017 Z06 outfitted with the Z07 performance package and, crucially, a manual transmission. You know, the enthusiast’s spec. The one you buy when you actually intend to drive the thing the way it was meant to be driven.
For a while, it was everything he’d pictured. Then, like it does for every true car guy eventually, the itch to modify set in.

The Build That Broke The Car
Berry did what most Corvette owners do when the itch hits: he went looking for more power. On the recommendation of others in the scene, he brought the Z06 to a well-known shop for a camshaft upgrade: a fairly routine bolt-in for most LT4-powered cars.
It didn’t go routine. The results were bad enough that the engine failed outright, and it didn’t fail quietly. With barely 1,000 miles on the fresh cam job, the motor grenaded itself, leaving the short block packed with metal debris. The car Berry had waited his whole life to own was now a very expensive, very silent driveway ornament.
For most people, that’s where the story ends. A sad post in a Corvette forum, an insurance claim, maybe a “for sale, needs engine” listing. But Berry isn’t most people, and neither is the world he comes from.
When The Hot Rodder Instinct Kicks In

There’s an old, unwritten rule in the hot rodding world: when things go sideways, you don’t sell — you double down. Berry wasted no time wallowing. Instead, he made a phone call.
That call went to Beau Bradley, a close friend and the owner of Ghost Performance, a local shop with experience in late-model GM performance builds. Bradley was exactly the right guy for the job — someone who understood both the technical challenge in front of him and the personal stakes for his friend. This wasn’t a customer car. This was Berry’s dream, sitting in pieces, waiting for someone who cared enough to get it right.
With the factory motor a total loss, there was no salvaging the original. This would be a clean-sheet rebuild. Bradley and Berry turned to Late Model Engines (LME) to build something entirely new: a 416 cubic-inch stroker motor that would turn a painful setback into a serious upgrade.
Building The 416: The New Heart Of The Beast
LME didn’t cut corners on the short block. The specification sheet reads like a wish list for anyone building a serious LT4-based stroker:
- Callies Compstar 4.00-inch forged steel crankshaft
- Callies Extreme I-Beam connecting rods
- Diamond forged pistons
- LME CNC-ported LT4 cylinder heads
- Custom-ground hydraulic roller camshaft
- Johnson short-travel lifters
- Katech oil pump
- ARP head studs
Every piece was chosen to survive exactly the kind of abuse a car like this would eventually see. Because this time, the build was being done right the first time.

Feeding The Boost
A stroker motor this size needed serious airflow to make it worthwhile, and that’s where the factory supercharger got its own makeover. The stock 1.7-liter LT4 blower was shipped off to Kong Performance for X-Port porting and fitted with a 2.3-inch upper pulley, then paired with a 9.45-inch lower pulley from ATI Performance — a combination built to deliver boost pressure worthy of the new 416. A Cordes Performance cooling tank was added to keep supercharger temps in check under sustained boost.
On the induction side, a Katech 103 mm throttle body and a Roto-Fab “Big Gulp” cold air intake handled getting air in. On the way out, a set of Kooks 2-inch long-tube headers fed into an X-pipe with the mufflers deleted entirely — a decision that makes a lot more sense once you know Berry lives in the kind of rural Georgia country where nobody’s complaining about drone.

Fueling was addressed with a DSX low-side fuel system, installed to give the factory LT4 high-pressure pump the support it needed to keep up with the engine’s new appetite. And before Bradley ever slid the freshly built 416 back into the engine bay, a Monster triple-disc clutch went in to make sure the driveline could handle the stroker’s dramatically increased torque curve.
The Numbers That Made It All Worth It
Once the new engine was fired up and broken in, the Corvette went to Scott Battiste at Wicked Performance for tuning. The results silenced any doubts: 864 rear-wheel horsepower and 812 lb./ft. of rear-wheel torque, on 93 octane pump gas and 18 psi of boost.
For context, that’s more than double what the Z06 made from the factory, out of a car that, not long before, had been sitting with a metal-shaving-filled engine and an uncertain future.

Looks To Match The Muscle
With the powerplant sorted, Berry turned his professional eye — the one he uses on customer cars every day — toward his own. A C7 ZR1 hood and front bumper were fitted and finished in Corvette Yellow Racing Tintcoat to flow seamlessly with the rest of the body. Under the hood, Bradley handled a coil relocation, and the supercharger and valve covers were custom painted to tie the engine bay into the same visual theme.
The car rolls on factory C7 ZR1 wheels wrapped in Toyo Proxes R888R tires, sized to clear the massive carbon ceramic brakes that came standard with the Z07 package. Brakes that, fittingly, are more than up to the task of hauling down a nearly 1,000-horsepower Corvette.

A Dream, Broken And Rebuilt
Every serious car guy has a version of Bradley Berry’s story somewhere in their past, or their future. You chase the dream car for years. You finally get it. And then, just when it feels complete, it breaks your heart.
What separates the Berrys of the world from everyone else isn’t that the heartbreak never happens — it’s what they do next. Berry didn’t walk away, and he didn’t do it alone. He called a friend. That friend called in favors, called in specialists, and turned a blown short block into a 935-horsepower stroker motor built by some of the best names in the LS/LT performance world.
The Z06 that sits in Jefferson, Georgia, today isn’t just Bradley Berry’s dream car anymore. It’s proof of what happens when a dream gets broken and a circle of friends refuses to let it stay that way — built back bigger, louder, and considerably faster than it ever left the factory.
