One of the more unusual Camaros to emerge at the 2009 SEMA Show came about from one of the more unexpected alliances. Neil Tjin has long been know as a top flight tuner and show car builder within the import scene for a long time. At the 2008 SEMA Show, Tjin had been particularly struck by two concept Camaros that were shown there – the dark blue Grand Am racer and the two-tone GM Accessories cruiser.
For the 2009 Show, Tjin would build a custom Camaro to be shown in the Air Lift booth. After winning a GM Design award and touring the country, this one of a kind Camaro is now for sale.
At the core of the Camaro is a reborn (I’d hate to call it rebuilt) LS3 motor from Turnkey Engine Supply. After disassembly, deburring and honing, the everything was blueprinted and balanced as needed, including the K1 Technologies forged, 4-inch stroke crankshaft and 6.125-inch H-beam billet connecting rods.
JE Pistons supplied the forged FSR pistons, setting up an 8.8:1 compression ratio for the air provided by the Vortech supercharger. The 414ci engine also received the best of detail components, including ACL main and rod bearings, ARP head studs and Turnkey Engine Supply pushrods. The cumulative result of these changes will deliver 712 horse power and 645ft- lbs of torque at the touch of your right foot.
What most people see is on the outside and how the car presents itself. “Stance” is probably the one thing that sets winners apart from the rest and this car has it in spades. Starting with an Air Lift digital air suspension, Tjin added big brakes from Baer, including 6-piston calipers on both the front and rear ends. The rolling stock is 22×9-inch and 22×10.5-inch Forgestar Concave F14 wheels, fitted with 255/30R22 and 295/25R22 Falken FK-452 tires. If you’re looking for stance, this car has a surplus of it.
OK, so far, the list of upgrades is pretty impressive, but not really what you’d call visionary. For that, we need to look at the inside and exterior of this car. The office space in this brute has been completely refinished in custom black suede with purple stitching. A custom gauge pod with Auto Meter gauges compliments the carbon fiber seats and Status Racing harnesses.
Image Dynamics provided much of the upgraded sound system, including subwoofers, amplifiers, mids and highs. Scosche provided the wiring to string it all together and Odyssey batteries keep the power available when its needed.
In its SEMA deportment, the car was painted in a special Dupont Metallic Green paint, with a matte version used for highlights. Before that was done, however, the side vents and reverse lights were smoothed out. HID and LED lighting replaced the original components and a Webasto sunroof was added.
Following the SMEA Show, this Camaro SS went on a cross country tour, for which it was fitted with a matte black wrap and hot rod flames, giving the new owner several possible looks. The car currently resides in Irvine, California, and has only 1,400 miles on the odometer. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own a significant collector car.
