Building a high-horsepower engine requires making smart choices about where to spend your budget. While cutting corners on certain accessories might seem appealing, sacrificing quality on essential components will almost always cause major headaches down the road. For the 600-horsepower LS build known as Project Swedish Meatball, we knew the engine would see daily street driving and rigorous track abuse. Instead of gambling on cheap replacements, we opted to upgrade the cooling and timing systems with proven hardware from Melling.

Enter The Melling Water Pump

Most enthusiasts immediately associate the Melling name with high-volume oil pumps and valvetrain upgrades. However, their expertise extends far beyond combustion and lubrication. Melling began manufacturing OEM water pumps back in 2009 and currently produces hundreds of thousands of units annually. That extensive manufacturing background allowed them to launch a robust line of aftermarket water pumps. The Swedish Meatball team decided to utilize one of these heavy-duty pumps to ensure the coolant keeps flowing when the temperatures rise.

The Importance Of Casting

Water pumps endure brutal operating conditions. They are constantly subjected to high-pressure, hot fluid, and massive temperature fluctuations. Melling representative Cale Risinger explained that precise casting and machining are mandatory to prevent leaks and ensure proper flow.

Internal Components Matter

The seals and bearings are the most common failure points in any water pump, which is why Melling partners with top-tier suppliers to source the best internal components. A perfectly balanced impeller and pulley assembly prevents premature bearing wear, ensuring the pump survives extreme racing environments.

Heavy Duty Timing Sets

Keeping the valvetrain synchronized is just as critical as keeping the block cool. To complement the new water pump, Project Swedish Meatball also received a premium Melling timing set. These kits are engineered specifically for high-performance applications. They feature a billet steel camshaft sprocket and heat-treated teeth for maximum durability. A single-row roller chain and an integrated timing chain damper work together to improve longevity under heavy loads. The one-piece pump drive also utilizes heat-treated teeth, providing another layer of strength. Overlooking these vital parts is a quick way to ruin a build, but investing in quality hardware guarantees reliable horsepower.

Cooling is one of those systems enthusiasts rarely think about until something goes wrong. Unfortunately, by the time a water pump starts leaking, making noise, or failing to circulate coolant properly, the damage may already be underway. Whether you’re daily driving a stock Silverado, cruising a classic Chevelle with an LS swap, or pushing a boosted combination at the drag strip, a dependable water pump is just as important as the camshaft, radiator, or cooling fans.

Melling’s experience as both an OEM supplier and aftermarket manufacturer means its water pumps are built with the same focus on durability, precision, and long-term reliability that enthusiasts have come to expect from the company’s engine components. At the end of the day, making horsepower is only half the battle. Keeping your engine cool enough to enjoy it mile after mile is what allows all that hard work to pay off.
