The Jimmy was GMC’s take on the Chevy K5 Blazer, and both are as iconic as almost any classic car. The two-door offroad vehicle was the original SUV and many people were disappointed when the General ceased production in 1991 to make way for the Yukon. Creating renderings of classic vehicles reimagined with current or modern styling is nothing new, but Flat Out Autos of Jonesboro, Arkansas is known for taking things a step further and building modern versions of some of our favorite classics. One such model they offer is their take on a modern GMC Jimmy. They debuted the SUV at the SEMA Show in 2022 and received high praise for the quality, fit, and finish of their new two-door Jimmy conversion.

While perusing the auction site Bring A Trailer I came across this 2022 GMC Jimmy that I had recently seen in person at the 2023 SEMA Show. It is build number three from Flat Out Autos and only has 212 miles on the odometer. This Jimmy started life as a regular cab long-bed GMC Sierra AT4 four-wheel-drive pickup truck before going under the knife. The talented team at Flat Out Autos shortened the frame to match the now extra-short five-foot, eight-inch bed. From there, the bed and cab are mated together to form a unibody, just like the original Jimmy. The back of the cab is removed to create an open interior and access to the rear power-folding bench seat. A custom bed cap that is removable for open-air cruising and offroading completes the exterior transformation from a Sierra pickup truck to a Jimmy SUV.

To further customize this Jimmy, a roll bar was installed and the interior was reupholstered in blue leather with white piping with matching color-coordinated accents on the dash, center console, door panels, and side panels. The exterior is finished in Porsche Chalk Gray with custom Jimmy badges. The suspension was upgraded with front upper control arms from BDS and Fox shocks in the front and rear. This Jimmy rolls on black-finished 22-inch Rotiform wheels wrapped in 285/50R22 Nitto Ridge Grappler tires.

One of the great things about the Flat Out Autos Jimmy conversion is that all of the factory powertrain and electronics remain intact and functional. The tailgate is the electronic MultiPro version that includes a backup camera, electric lock, and a hands-free opening feature. The factory GMC interior options remain, including heated and cooled front seats and a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple Carplay and Android Auto connectivity. According to the auction ad, the center console was upgraded to a unit from a GMC Denali that features a wireless cell phone charger and USB ports. Powering this Jimmy is the stock 5.3-liter V8 that sounds better thanks to a Vance & Hines cat-back exhaust system. The factory 10-speed automatic transmission sends power through a dual-range transfer case and a shortened drive shaft to the stock rearend.

Looking at images of this Jimmy and considering the amount of work involved in creating this unique and completely custom unibody SUV the winning bid of $150,500 seems like a fair price. Maybe GM should take notice and bring the two-door GMC Jimmy back to life in 2025. In the meantime, Flat Out Autos’ 2022 Jimmy is doing an excellent job of representing the iconic name.
