Brian King’s 800 Horsepower AWD Cutlass Versus 800 HP Jeep SRT-8

Why would you build an outrageous all-wheel drive Olds Cutlass to drag race? “A friend of mine owns an EVO and I raced him, and I lost pretty badly,” said Brian King about the wildest G-body that we’ve seen. First seen doing a four wheel drive burnout in his driveway, this 1982 Hurst/Olds Cutlass has become a terror on the track. Packed with a Lingenfelter Performance Engineering 403 cubic inch LS2 engine boosted by a ProCharger D-1SC supercharger pushing 15 pounds of boost, the Olds runs 10.70 at 130 MPH, while spinning all four tires on the launch.

The Olds’ LS swap was cool enough, but the all-wheel drive conversion is the stuff of which legends are made. “Some of the parts came out of an 2007 Trailblazer SS, and some of them came from an Oldsmobile Bravada. It was a lot of welding and a lot of frame fabrication to make everything fit. It was pretty basic, I thought,” said King. “A little bit of time and a little bit of patience.”

King has owned the car since 1994, driving the car to high school. The custom Olds continues to be an ongoing project for him. “I bet I only have about 40 hours into the frame build. Once I had everything lined up and welded into place, it was pretty easy to put the parts in from there. It was more or less locating the parts,” he stated. The floorpan area needed to be modified to fit the transfer case and there was just enough room for the front driveshaft to run straight to the front differential.

King’s Olds became popular due to his driveway burnout video.

The 1320 Video crew ran into this beast at the I-29 Dragway No-Prep Race and caught it running head-to-head against another monster, a Jeep with a 392ci power plant and an identical F1-A Procharger that was also throwing down 800 horsepower. The matchup, with these two vehicles driving all four wheels on each, was an incredible race that should happen again. Let’s hope that the 1320 Video crew is there to film it when it does.
