C8 Corvette Takes On Dodge Demon In Drag and Roll Race

C8 Corvette Takes On Dodge Demon In Drag and Roll Race

A couple of weeks ago, Hennessey put its C8 Corvette up against a stock 707 horse 2020 Hellcat Charger. From a dead stop, the C8 leaps out against the traction-limited Mopar for a massive victory. When the two cars went from a roll, the C8 jumped out once again, but this time was run down before the finish line. We were surprised at how well the C8 launches. This first-year mid-engine Corvette is a force to reckon with already and it’s only going to get better as the performance aftermarket catches up.

The guys over at Throttle House decided to do their own showdown between Chevrolet and Mopar. This time, instead of paring the C8 against a Hellcat, they lined the car up against the wicked Dodge Demon. Would the C8 be able to compete with the Demon that has 313 more horsepower?

As the pair launch in the video, you can tell that both cars spin the tires. However, the C8 gets the advantage quickly and, just like in the Hennessey video, leaps forward, creating some distance. By half-track, the C8 has several car lengths on the Demon, but it’s starting to lose ground as the supercharged Mopar makes a run for the finish line. As the two hit the line, they are separated by about a car length with the Corvette taking the win.

For the second race, the guys lined up and went from a roll this time to eliminate the traction deficit of the Demon. Surprisingly, once again, the C8 lept out in front of the Mopar. But this time, the Demon overtook the Vette before the end of the 1/4-mile by only a car or two.

Here are a few things to note about these races. One, and they mention this in the video, the Demon is a handful on the street when trying to launch from a standstill. It makes a ton of power and torque. And while it’s on a massive sticky tire, the 315/40R18 Nitto NT05R drag radials have an impossible job to do on the street. Secondly, the two cars are racing on asphalt, which is a nightmare for traction. And it’s not just asphalt. It’s dusty. More than likely, this is a road that is not used that frequently. While this is apparent throughout the video, but it’s undeniable at the 4:11 mark as the Demon makes a cloud of haze as it races toward the finish line. Finally, the Demon weighs 4,280-pounds while the lighter C8 Corvette comes in at 3,647. And while some might think a 633-pound difference is not that bad, think of it this way. You would need to stuff two more 200-pound individuals and one 233-pound person in the C8 to get it up to the Mopar’s weight. And now we want to see four adults try to fit in a C8 for some odd reason. But we digress, 633-pounds is a huge difference in the weight of these two cars.

There is no doubt that the C8 is a fantastic car, especially for the price. And the launch control is unlike anything we’ve ever seen. When the aftermarket gets this vehicle sorted out, we will see what Chevrolet’s new platform is capable of on and off the race track. Until that happens, we can all sit back and speculate on how awesome the C8 Z06 will be.
