Corvette C7.R Fire At Daytona Won’t Cause Rolex 24 Setback

The #4 Chevrolet Corvette Racing C7.R,

During testing this past weekend at Daytona International Speedway, Swiss driver Marcel Fassler had to make a swift exit from the Number 4 Corvette C7.R after catching fire in turn two on the final day of testing. After investigation by the racing team, they determined failure of a fuel injector was the root cause for the fire. Due to the fuel demands of the C7.R’s V8, the high-pressure direct fuel injection leak caused fuel to be sprayed in the engine bay.

In an official statement, Jim Campbell, Chevrolet U.S VP of performance vehicles and motorsports, explained, “During this morning’s practice session at Daytona, the No. 4 Corvette C7.R experienced an issue with a fuel line that allowed fuel to escape, contact a hot surface and ignite. The fire was quickly extinguished.”

“The damage was limited to the engine compartment of the car. The driver, Marcel Fässler, was taken to the infield care center as a precaution; he was evaluated, released and cleared to drive. Until the root cause of the issue with the #4 Corvette C7.R can be identified, the #3 Corvette C7.R will not return to the track this weekend.” After further review of the cause of the fire, Campbell said, “Both Corvette C7.Rs will be ready to race in the Rolex 24 at Daytona.”

Although this seems like a large setback for the team, the car has been shipped back to their shop in Michigan, where they expect to be have the car up and running before the race at the end of the month. Luckily there is decent raw footage of the C7.R Corvette and other cars during the Roar Before The 24 on previous days, getting us excited for the upcoming 24 Hours Of Daytona.
