Corvette Racing’s Antonio Garcia Proves Negative For COVID

The entire Corvette Racing team is still relishing in their recent First and Second-Place wins at the Rolex 24-Hour race at Daytona. The win comes in a savory response to the team’s endurance, training, and luck. The entire team celebrated as a team, save for one integral member.

Antonio Garcia could not complete his final stint behind the wheel of the No. 3 Corvette C8.R and Jordan Taylor took the car to the checkered flag for the win. Instead, and per IMSA and track protocol, Antonio was whisked away, thanks to a positive COVID test conducted at the track during the race. Antonio reportedly had taken the “quick response’ test at the track during the race so he could be cleared for his travel back to Spain. He had taken a test previously, but wasn’t sure that he would get those results before his allotted travel. The test at the track was scheduled to have a much quicker turn-around time for a response.

Antonio DID receive the results sooner, but they were far from what anyone had anticipated. Antonio had COVID over a month ago, but had fully recovered and was cleared to race at Daytona last weekend. If you’ve ever heard the saying, “Good, Fast, or Inexpensive- pick two!”, you’ll likely see where this is going. Antonio received the news via email approximately four hours before the race’s completion. He had just finished a triple stint in the car when the results were in. At that point, Antonio had to endure the grueling finish of the race sitting alone in his car in a hotel parking lot nearby. He could watch the onboard video and cheer his teammates on, but they were unable to hear him and all the masks in the world didn’t make up for the distance between them.

Antonio’s test results were back in time, but their accuracy was called into question after the previous test’s results came back negative. It turns out that Antonio did not have COVID, and could have safely celebrated its commanding win with the entire team. And, let’s not forget that Antonio was scheduled to be the one driving the C8.R as it crossed the finish line, a high-water mark for any career race car driver. This would have been his third win of the famed race.

In a recent Tweet about the ordeal, Antonio explained his frustration and relief over the exhausting situation. Even when the unthinkable overshadows the men and women who comprise the Corvette Racing team, they exhibit the “NEVER give up!” attitude that has honed them into the force to be reckoned with both on-track and off.
