For Sale: Tire Melting, Big Cube LS Powered 1993 Mazda RX-7

They say when you mix LS power with a lightweight car, it’s the perfect balance. If that’s the case, we say a 427ci, all-aluminum LS V8 and a rear-wheel-driven JDM coupe must be the ultimate marriage.

Case in point is this 1993 Mazda RX-7, brought to us by Bring A Trailer. The RX-7, which has a mere four days left at auction, now features nearly six times the displacement in comparison to its original 1.3-liter rotary engine from the factory. And the best part is, the balance between power and its platform has not been disturbed. According to the original ad on BAT, the car was acquired by its current owner from the original owner more than fourteen years ago.

For those in the market for a fast, LS-powered ride, this RX-7 might just fit that bill, and it’s being offered at no reserve.

From the outside, you might just think this 1993 Mazda RX-7 was just another Japanese sports car. However, it’s under the hood of this JDM coupe that makes all the difference. (Photo credit: Bring A Trailer).

The new mill found under the hood of this RX-7 was blueprinted and built by Erik Koenig of HKE Racing Engines, and it features a host of changes from its original 5.7-liter LS1 architecture. The high compression (11.8:1), all-aluminum short-block makes use of 4.125-inch Darton MID sleeves, Diamond Racing forged pistons, Callies forged connecting rods and a forged crankshaft.

Adorning the top-end of the engine build, ARP head studs are tasked with keeping a pair of CNC-ported LS7 cylinder heads clamped down at maximum force, paired with a matching LS7 intake manifold, all ported by Greg Good. A Brian Tooley Racing stage IV camshaft and matching dual valvesprings controls the valve events, while JTR 1 7/8-inch headers and a custom 3-inch stainless steel exhaust provides clean-up duty in showing spent gasses the way out.

The LS-powered RX-7 relies on a Textralia clutch and a Tremec T56 Magnum six-speed manual transmission, which sends power to a ’03 SVT Cobra’s 8.8-inch IRS Trac Lock differential with 3.73 gears. A pair of DSS level 5 axles plants the power to the ground, and JIC coilovers on all four corners keeps the RX-7’s handling balanced.

For a car that we can only assume weighs roughly 3,000 pounds, makes 600 horsepower at the rear wheels and is ready to party and then some, this LS-powered 1993 Mazda RX-7 certainly is a bargain at a no reserve auction. For more information on the build, check out the original ad here.
