The news that a beloved American muscle car will return to the market with iconic V8 power has brought pure joy to many gearheads. Even if they realize that the next-gen Chevy Camaro might trade its classic two-door body for a more marketable four-door sedan. Giving up an iconic silhouette definitely stings. But fortunately, newly leaked details about the transmission options might just win back the hearts of drivers who prefer absolute control over their shifts.

General Motors (GM) plans to offer a traditional six-speed manual gearbox right alongside the Camaro’s standard automatic transmission. An insider familiar with the project noted: “The upcoming next-gen Chevy Camaro will offer three pedals as an option.” Keeping the manual alive represents a huge win for driving enthusiasts, and clocks with the current capabilities of the General’s much-lauded Alpha platform.
Most modern performance vehicles drop stick shifts completely to chase faster lap times. Even Chevrolet removed that option from the current mid-engine Corvette to focus entirely on track performance. That said, actually giving buyers the ability to row their own gears proves that the sheer joy of driving enjoyment still matters.
The updated Alpha 2 architecture provides a solid mechanical foundation for the next-gen Chevy Camaro. Internally called the Alpha 2-2 platform, this front-engine and rear-wheel-drive setup will also support the upcoming Cadillac CT5 and a future Buick sedan.

Transitioning to a four-door format gives the vehicle midsize proportions that closely match the physical footprint of the older Chevy SS and the current Malibu. While that specific size sounds like a standard family hauler, the design team is said to be actively avoiding giving the car a conventional three-box profile. They want to keep aggressive styling intact while adding the practicality of extra passenger room.
Adding extra doors will absolutely change the core identity of this famous American performance icon. Still, pairing a screaming internal combustion engine with a genuine six-speed manual gearbox makes the next-gen Chevy Camaro an incredibly appealing package for daily driving. Purists might need a minute to accept the extra doors, but having the chance to dump the clutch and burn rubber keeps the true attitude of the nameplate alive and well.
