Cadillac has been on a bit of an upswing lately, especially with the recent reveal of the all-new, Nurburgring-tested ATS. But even GM has to admit that the Cadillac lineup has gotten a bit… thin. Save for ATS and the trifecta of CTS models (sedan, coupe, and wagon), Cadillac has just one other car in its lineup, the underwhelming, front-drive XTS. The XTS is especially disappointing compared to the Cadillac Ciel concept, a rear-drive droptop with a twin-turbo V6.
But there may still be hope for a new, flashy “halo car” from Cadillac. While trolling patent sites, Car & Driver noted that GM recently trademarked the LTS moniker, and indicates that it could be for a large, rear-drive sedan.
In fact, Car & Driver claims that not one, but two large rear-wheel drive sedans are on the horizon for Cadillac, and either one of them could carry the LTS designation. There is the BMW 7-series fighter that we have discussed before, as well as another, even-larger sedan that will be top-level luxury.
C&D goes on to note that GM has used nearly every name it has trademarked for the Cadillac brand in recent years. Rumor is already floating around that the Cadillac XTS is merely a placeholder for a new large sedan based on an exclusive Cadillac platform. The future sounds bright indeed for Cadillac, but will the Ciel’s excellent design architecture find its way into the future LTS? We certainly hope so.
