Smokin Deals On Chevy SS Sedans Already Out There

If you’re a regular reader of LSXTV, then you likely know of most or all of the LS-powered GM cars that’ve been on the market, since the LS1-equipped 1997 Corvette and immediately-following 1998 Camaro Z28 first went on sale. Since then, all Corvettes and Camaros have been equipped with LS engines and the revolution has been in full swing now for close to two decades.

While we love Corvettes, Camaros and the short-lived 2004-06 Pontiac GTO just as much as many do, we also have a major interest in GM cars that have an LS engine, along with the practicality of a four-door sedan. In fact, we’ve now been shopping for just such a car over the last three or four months.

Of course the models we’re mainly looking at are the Pontiac G8, the Cadillac CTS-V and the Chevrolet SS. The G8s are cool and all, but many of them are getting up there in mileage accumulation. The 2nd-gen Cadillac Vs are also pretty awesome, but most of them are still a little too dear for our pocketbooks.

Which leaves the car we’re discussing here, the relatively new-to-the-market Chevy SS. Introduced as a new model for 2014, the SS is basically a reincarnated Pontiac G8. Yes, they are super-cool, but not the cheapest car in the world to buy at pretty much $50,000 for a brand-new one.

So what is the big news here? More than $18,000 that’s what. How so, you ask? Well, in the form of this slightly used 2014 SS we came across on Auto Trader, that’s how. That’s right, you can buy this ’14 SS from the Utah dealership offering the car right now. How slightly used is it? To us, less than 18,000 miles almost qualifies it as a demo, if not an almost new car.

So if you happen to be in the market for one of these totally cool LS3-powered super sedans, consider the work of finding one already done for you. Keep in mind, they’re almost completely unchanged from the 2014 model-year on through the brand-new ’16s in dealerships now.

The only major thing is if you must have a manual transmission and we understand that in many instances, as the ’14s are all automatics. The six-speed manual option became available in the ’15s and will likely remain so through the last year of SS production which is slated to be 2017.

As as interesting side note on our Chevy SS Auto Trader shopping adventures, we found a total of 746 of them for sale in our search of the lower 48. If you eliminate the black ones, the number is cut to 456. That’s a lot of black ones to be sure, so the red one we’re showing here is the lowest-price SS that’s not black. If black is your thing then the news gets even better with this one available for right at $30,000. Although it has more than 50,000 miles on it, it’ still a fairly good deal if you’re like us and nothing but a seriously cool LS-powered GM sports sedan will do.

Like the Pontiac G8, the SS is a Holden Commodore made in Australia. But unlike the G8, which had the L76--an Active-Fuel-Management-equipped version of the 6.0-liter LS2--the SSs are all 6.2-liter LS3 powered. The only G8s with an LS3 were the one-year-only 2009 GXP model and you can get an SS for the same price as a 7-year-old GXP.
