An automobile accident of this magnitude is certainly not something we like to see with any type of vehicle, ever. The fact it occurred approximately 65 miles away from our Corvette Online offices in Murrieta, hits a bit closer to home as we travel these same freeways daily.

The Torch Red Chevrolet Corvette C7 Stingray pictured was involved in a traffic collision that occurred just north of the Wilson Street onramp on State Route 55, an 18-mile north–south highway known as the Costa Mesa Freeway. Details leading up to the incident, or what caused it, have not yet been released to the public.

Here is what we do know from media reports: The Corvette was driven by a male in his 30s traveling southbound in afternoon rush hour traffic on August 11. A white four-door Ford F-150 pickup truck collided with the sportscar and landed on top, crushing the driver’s side completely and leaving only the left side, front-quarter unscathed.

We wish we could report the same status for the driver of the ‘Vette. The Costa Mesa Fire Department commented he was transported to a nearby trauma center. They did not elaborate on the extent of his injuries, although the jaws of life were put to use to extract him from the car.

The Orange County Register quoted Fire Captain Christ Coates as saying the driver was trapped inside the car while his passenger, a woman in her 30s, was able to get out of the car on her own. Coates continued by stating the driver needed to be cut out of the Corvette, and that the 30-minute ordeal was a tricky process.

“It almost becomes like a game of Jenga when you try to remove the bottom pieces without trying to topple the top,” Coates said.

An overhead image of the Corvette on the back of a tow truck was captured by Los Angeles-based television station KTLA, and shows the full extent of the damage.

Our thoughts are with the driver. We wish him a full recovery, and hope he is back behind the wheel of his replacement C7 when he is ready to get back on the road.
