Hearing a powerful American V8 roar to life always brings a special kind of joy to any true car enthusiast. General Motors has just given driving purists another massive reason to celebrate by officially announcing that the incredible 6.7-liter LS6, debuting in the 2027 Chevrolet Corvette, will be produced at its historic Flint facility. While the engine’s excellent performance numbers are a given, the fact that it will be bolted together in the same place that birthed the iconic Chevy small-block just adds fuel to the fire.

General Motors first built a small-block at this historic Michigan facility back in July of 1954 to power the classic 1955 Corvette. Over the following decades, the dedicated local crew produced more than 40 million V8 engines before shifting their production focus in 1999. While it is a modern mechanical marvel, the LS6, featuring a traditional overhead valve design, traces its conceptual roots all the way back to an original Buick patent from 1904. With Buick, of course, being the first General Motors division.

Today, General Motors honors that deep automotive heritage with an absolute monster of a powerplant. The brand-new, 409 cubic inch LS6 creates an impressive 535 horsepower and 520 pound-feet of torque. Engineers achieved a combination of high power and great efficiency by utilizing a healthy 13.0:1 compression ratio. Paul Tanis, the plant operations director, proudly noted: “We are incredibly proud to bring the V8 back home to Flint, especially as we begin assembling the new LS6 here.” Mike Kociba, the assistant chief engineer, also added: “With the LS6, we are leaning into our small-block history with a big-displacement, high-compression V8 engine.”

Buying a modern sports car usually involves looking strictly toward future automotive technology and digital enhancements. However, buyers stepping into the upcoming 2027 Corvette will simultaneously acquire a cool piece of American history. It’s really a full-circle moment, with Flint continuing to define American performance by offering the latest and greatest high-compression V8.
