Vari-Flow Adjustable Flow Valve From Turn One Steering Systems

If you have ever driven a road race tuned car on the street, then you know it’s not the best scenario for daily driving. Aftermarket components like adjustable coil-overs and an additional set of wheels with sticky tires make racing your daily on the weekend possible without having to sacrifice comfort too much. While these particular parts are good to switch back and forth for the weekend warrior, one thing that enthusiasts have been stuck with is the steering system and its feel.

While the steering can be adjusted for a preferred feel, it’s not something that you want to change regularly. It’s a messy process that involves disconnecting the power steering hoses and changing out a restrictor to vary the amount of volume going to the rack and pinion. You may be ok with a competition feel on the street, but it might not be ideal over time.

Turn One High-Performance Steering Systems has a new product that can cure this ailment. The Vari-Flow adjustable flow valve allows for fine-tuning of the steering feel and assists level. This product is easy to install and replaces the factory flow restrictor. You will no longer need to remove the steering pump, lines, fittings, or re-bleed the system to make adjustments. With the simple twist of a knob, you can finetune your power steering system giving you the exact feel you desire on and off the track.

According to Junior Roethlisberger, Vice President of Operations at Turn One, “The Vari-Flow is a great tool. If you have a street vehicle that you are racing, you can instantly adjust the feel of the steering. The adjustable flow rate will change your steering effort.” By effort, Junior is referring to the amount of resistance it takes to turn the steering wheel. When you adjust the fluid rate, it can make the car easier to turn or harder depending on the amount of fluid allowed to the rack and pinion.

While the Vari-Flow is an excellent tool for dual purpose use, it’s also fantastic for multi-driver vehicles, driver development, and different driving situations. Junior said, “The Vari-Flo is an adjustable flow valve that will regulate flow down to a half gallon a minute and up to three gallons a minute in half gallon increments. This product will fit any Type 2 General Motors power steering pump depending on pulley clearances.” Turn One has had many customers use this product on various Camaros, Corvettes, and other GM vehicles.

The Vari-Flow is mainly designed for rack and pinion steering systems. Junior states, “Typically we don’t recommend the Vari-Flow for a steering box application. A steering box has a large piston area and if you limit the flow too much it might result in a sluggish feel when performing a quick maneuver.” A rack and pinion system has a smaller piston area which allows room for more adjustability with flow rates.
