When you hear the name AMS Motorsports, it’s likely that you instantly think “import tuners.” That would be completely understandable given the amount of nasty boosted imports running around with their gear. However, after watching this unforgettable video of their shop van tearing it up on the drag strip, the terms “12-second 700 HP van” might come to mind from now on.

The AMS Express is still powered by the stock 5.3L short block, but makes just over 700 horsepower with the help of a 72mm turbo.

This late-model Chevy Express Van actually belongs to Arne Toman, Vice President of AMS. Toman admits that beyond imports, he’s really into sleepers and off the wall projects – and the van would definitely fit into both of those categories. The Express regularly handles the cargo-carrying duties for the shop, but here’s much more to this van than just the massive amount of enclosed storage space it offers.

The stock 5.3L has been upgraded by AMS with a set of 317 cylinder heads and a boost friendly LS6 camshaft, and a single 72mm turbo to provide a little extra atmosphere. The boost is controlled by a Tial 50mm wastegate, while two Aeromotive Stealth 340 fuel pumps and 72 lb./hr. injectors keep the iron LS well fed. A Cummins intercooler and a Devil’s Own meth injection kit cools down the boost, and when all is said and done, a little over 700 horsepower gets transferred to all four tires by an all-wheel-drive 4L80E trans.

Great power, but don’t think that’s even the most impressive thing about the AMS Express van. We’re more struck by the fact that it can get all 6,000 pounds of its mass across the 60-foot mark in 1.7 seconds, and finish the quarter mile in 12.49 seconds at 108 MPH.
