No matter what form the classic Camaro model takes over the years, there is one thing that stands true- it’s all about increasing the car’s performance. Chevrolet is doing just that for 2014 with the reintroduction of the Z/28 model. But just what caliber of performance can you expect, and more important yet, will it stand up to the Ford’s latest track-targeted Mustang? Check out the video from Chevrolet above to find out.

Testing the road-course capabilities of any modern performance car is pretty standard these days, and when it comes to vehicles from General Motors, there’s no better place to test out the latest performance standards than at the Milford Proving Grounds. Of course, proving your performance capabilities is always more fun with a bit of friendly competition, so Camaro’s Chief Engineer, Al Oppenheiser, and the GM crew opted to bring out the latest Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca to the track for a bit of head-to-head action.

The Z/28 name has always conjured up images of a more performance-oriented, track-worthy muscle car, and the latest Z/28 model follows along those lines precisely. Not only was the Z/28 able to brake later and enter corners faster than the Boss 302, but the Camaro’s trip around the track resulted in more longitudinal G force and a faster lap time.

In fact, the Z/28 completed its Milford run in 1 minute and 53.71 seconds with the Boss 302 completed its time trial in 1 minute and 59.05 seconds. That’s a difference of just over 5 seconds.

Now, we know the Z/28 wasn’t tested against the latest GT500 in this video, and some people may be skeptical of the results because of that fact. In reality, the GT500 is quicker than either the Boss 302 or the Z/28 in a straight line, but not as fast around a tight, technically demanding test track like the Milford layout. The Laguna Seca is the closest Z/28 competitor in the Mustang stable, and as you can see, it’s just not that close…
