What’s you idea of a burnout? I guess it depends on what part of the planet you’re standing on when someone asks you that question. If you’re an American, it can best be defined as smoking your tires in a straight line until either you get bored or until the car eventually catches traction and carries you along on the rest of your journey.

If you’re an Australian, it has a different meaning entirely. You see in the Land Down Under, when a gearhead does a burnout, it usually lasts for several minutes concluding only when the tires blow out or the car catches on fire. It sounds insane, and it kind of is but man does it look like fun.

The Aussies take their smokefests quite seriously, and more often than not, tend to attach a pair of junkyard steelies with old tires to the back of their cars.

They’ll burn the tires off until there’s nothing left of them. Then they keep going, throwing sparks at the crowd and causing a ruckus. Why? We don’t know, but that’s just how they roll. Either way, we enjoyed watching this turbocharged, LS1-equipped 2000-2002 VX Holden Commodore SS burning rubber at the SummerNats show.
