Those Aussies like their GM muscle. Check out this black 1974 Holden Monaro GTS fire off blistering, sub-ten second runs in the land down under. FullSpeed’s cool YouTube channel has the video.
There’s a little deja vu when seeing Aussie GM cars for the first time. The styling is kinda like a 1973 Chevelle got busy with a ’75 Nova ,and this seventies era Monaro was the result. Too bad this car never was available in the US. The styling and size of the car probably would have found popularity with US fans. It looks cool at 150 MPH too.
The GM family thing keeps going with the honker LSX under the hood. The 427ci V8 sports a Garrett turbocharger, Haltech EFI on E85 pump fuel, driven through a Preston Automatics TH400 transmission and LMS rear end, and rolling on Radial Pro tires. The guys at Tunnel Vision did the tune.
The car has a best ET of 8.9 seconds at 155 MPH with 19 pounds of boost but as you can see from the video, it can repeat sub-ten second passes easily. We all love a big smokey burnout, but spinning tires is also wasting time, and check out the power transfer of this car. The driver’s skills are a big factor too. The thing gets a little squirrelly during one pass but our driver recovers nicely.
We love Aussie flavored GM muscle and this rig is testament to Down Under engineering and tuning expertise.
