Unfortunately for many of us, the dream of owning, or even driving a ’63 split-window may never become a reality. For President Barack Obama, that opportunity pulled up outside the Oval Office. Getting behind the wheel of this legendary car with comedian Jerry Seinfeld, the Commander In Chief put the pedal to the metal. Well, sort of.
An avid car collector and enthusiast, Seinfeld is a privileged comic/actor/writer/producer who hosts a series of 20-minute vignettes called “Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee,” and he does pretty much what the title suggests — cruises around with fellow comedians (and other prominent figures) in classic, iconic cars to get coffee.
While each episode features Seinfeld, a special guest, and the expected comedic dialogue, the real stars of the show are, of course, the cars. Each bit involves a different vehicle ranging from classic musclecars to vintage European roadsters — every one distinctly remarkable. Some of the cars featured on the show include a ’56 Corvette, ’57 Bel Air, and even a 1970 Ferrari Daytona (which, of course off script, breaks down).
In one of the more recent episodes, Seinfeld pays a “casual” visit to the president, stopping by the White House in a handsome ’63 Stingray coupe. The car, as he elaborates in the full video (which you can check out here), boasts a 5.4-liter, 327 cubic inch Chevy small-block and four-barrel carb. After stating specifications, Seinfeld goes on to say a few well-suited words about the ‘Vette — mentioning its “stubby, edgy” style, and perfect proportions and stance.
President Obama, upon being presented with the car, also expresses his admiration, remarking on the Stingray’s beauty, and states that since he was a child he as always wanted a ‘Vette. Yes, even the president says this classic Corvette represents a dream car.
So, regardless of any quarrels one may have with President Obama’s politics, you have to admit the man has great taste in cars.
Though they didn't even leave White House grounds, it seems like the POTUS had himself a great time.
