Remember the racing scene form “Grease”, and how it just dripped with sex appeal? Where Cha Cha dropped her neck scarf for a balls-to-the-wall drag race between Danny Zuko & Leo? This isn’t quite it, but Kent “Mr Horsepower” Rose is somewhat of a modern day “Cha Cha” – sunglasses and all. He’s not a super sexy woman in skin-tight yellow pants – but more so your man-in-overalls, and you can still see his face adorning t-shirts all across Floyd County, Kentucky. That’s because Mr. Horsepower is the official “arm dropper”, of the popular “Hillbilly Arm Drop Drags”.
The Hillbilly Arm Drop Drags (HBADD) is the second biggest event in Floyd County, Kentucky (after “Apple Day”) with racers coming as far as Missouri and South Carolina to participate. As you’ll remember from our coverage of the very first HBADD, The event is held near Prestonburg, Kentucky, on the runway of the Combs Airport, less than 300 miles away from Bowling Green. It’s not quite the event that LS Fest is, but there’s nothing else like it.
In two days – May 4th and 5th, over 10,000 spectators and racers attended the “Arm Drop Drags,” to watch both practice and races. As Mr. Rose, himself tells the Floyd County Times, ““The Arm Drop Nation is everywhere. It’s amazing to go out now and see all of the people who are wearing Arm Drop T-shirts. They’re proud and we are too. We are Arm Drop Nation”
The event included such big names in the racing world such as Jeff Lutz, Patrick Barnhill and Willard Kinzer, (who hails from Floyd County). Just a quick search of YouTube will bring up tons of videos from the event, and you’ll notice that the LSX world was very well represented. It looks as if the HBADD community is planning a 4th of July weekend for all of you LSX fanatics, so in the words of Kentucky LSXMAG-ians – “Come out and ‘getyasum!”
