Video: ZR1 vs. Z06 – Is More Horsepower Always Better?

Few things beat the patriotic symphony of a Corvette charging down a runway. The only thing that matches it? The patriotic symphony of two Corvettes charging down a runway. High Tech Corvette brings us such an ensemble in their video from Texas Speed Syndicate’s ‘Project X’ event.

ZR1 vs Z06 01Texas Speed Syndicate (TSS) is an automotive event organization that hosts both small, informal competitions – such as Project X and the Quick 30 – and distinguished exhibitions – such as the Texas Invitational and Runway Rivalry events. TSS’s primary goal is to provide a relaxed, sociable environment for car guys to gather and do what they do best – race.

Typically, participants consist of exotics like GT-Rs and Lamborghinis, but a few high-end sports cars make their way to the strip as well. And the two ‘Vettes in the video definitely qualify as ‘high-end’, with their combined power reaching well over 1700 horses.

But while head-to-head action between two C6’s always makes for a great race (and a great sound), what comes as a surprise is that the 780-horsepower ZR1 outruns the 1000-horsepower Z06. And even more surprising is that the 1000-horse Z06 had drag radials, whereas the underpowered ZR1 was wearing regular, street tires.

Of course, the race was from a roll, so the Zr1’s victory could be owed to it’s slight jump on the Z06. Also, from what the video shows us, it seems that the Z06 would’ve taken the cake had the race been longer. However, a win’s a win – and in this David-and-Goliath-like case, 780 horsepower was able to outmatch a 1000-horsepower beast.

Regardless of the variables present in this matchup, the race proves that sometimes less is more. It’s not always about the amount of power, but the delivery. After all, what good is all that power if you can’t put it to the ground?
