A couple weeks back, we all found out that production of the SS, Caprice SSV, and Commodore is coming to an end. It was a sad day for us here at the office, but there’s no doubt that it was even worse for those fans in Australia, as the last their domestic auto industry died too. Holden has since promised it will bring a replacement for the beloved Commodore in form of a rear-wheel drive V8.
Of course, we automatically think they would turn towards the Camaro and Corvette, as there have been rumors about the two floating around and, honestly, they’re quite overdue in the land down under. A Holden spokesperson previously stated the Camaro “is only compatible with left-hand drive,” (which doesn’t make sense to us) meaning, unfortunately, that it might just be out of the picture.
On a better note, since GM’s last announcement, they’ve spent big bucks attempting to trademark the Corvette logo in Australia, even though the former British colony has previously denied the request. We don’t want to get too excited, but it sounds like the Corvette is definitely a possibility down under.
Plus, lets not forget– GM just hired Mike Simcoe, Austrailian-native and former Holden designer, to head the design team of the C8. Everyone knows that it’s a big responsibility regarding the evolution of the ‘Vette, as it’s next edition is expected to be mid-engined, and now maybe even be sold in right-hand drive in Australia. Let’s wait and see what Simcoe and his team have cooking for us.
