GM Pairs Its New 6.6 Liter L78 Engine With Corvette Fuel Tech

The 6.6-liter L78 engine gives General Motors truck fans a thrilling preview of the upcoming 2027 model year. Engineers in Detroit are preparing an aggressive lineup of naturally aspirated small-block V8 powerplants for the next-generation Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 pickups.

While full-size half-ton work trucks usually receive separate mechanical hardware from track-ready sports cars, the new trucks’ powerplant borrows sophisticated combustion technology directly from the mid-engine 2027 Chevrolet Corvette.

Recent engine bay photos confirm that the 6.6-liter L78 engine carries visible metal fuel rails along the intake covers, revealing the exact same dual-injection architecture for the half-ton pickups.

That setup pairs high-pressure direct injection inside the cylinder with port injectors located upstream in the intake runners. By combining both fuel delivery methods, powertrain calibrators manage combustion stability across heavy towing loads, wide-open throttle pulls, and low-speed idling conditions.

That flexibility keeps the intake valves clean while delivering maximum fuel volume during hard acceleration. GM promises that the fresh pickup truck engine will claim the title of the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 in its segment. Discussing the new truck powerplant, next-gen Silverado chief engineer Scott Bell notes that the engine sounds “amazing.”

Sharing advanced fuel delivery hardware with America’s premier sports car proves that GM still values genuine cylinder displacement over small-displacement turbochargers.
