If you’ve ever checked out a Fluidampr harmonic damper, but wondered just how long the fluid inside was capable of doing it’s job, we think we’ve found the answer.
Over on the Fluidampr website, they’ve got information from longtime NHRA racer, champion, and former record-holder Harry Luzader that it’ll last for 25 years. How, you ask? Well, it seems that Luzader put his Opel GT drag car in storage back in 1988 and just recently took it out. In fact, the Fluidampr on the car is one of the first ones ever made, and as Luzader was curious to know whether the damper could still perform, he sent it in to the factory to be checked out. The damper still shows evidence of the date stamp from 1986 and the unique web design hub that Fluidampr was using during that time period.
Using the company’s internal testing methods that can test damper performance without opening up the housing, coupled with computerized logarithmic decay modeling, the damper was shown to provide a sharp reduction in the vibration amplitudes and in fact is still operating as designed even today – the test results on his damper are over there on the left.
Luzader tells the Fluidampr team that he’s prepared to use the damper again on the new engine he’s building for the car, a street-going 401 cubic inch small block stuffed with a Callies crankshaft, Mahle pistons, and a Crane roller camshaft.
Luzader is best known for the 1932 Ford he raced from 1963 to 1974, which took him to the winner’s circle at the US Nationals in Indianapolis in Comp Eliminator in 1968, and was honored by Ford Motor Company in 2007 with a spot on the “75 Most Significant ’32 Ford Hot Rods” list.
