Cadillac ATS Coupe Debuts; Wagon and Convertible Could Follow

2015-cadillac-ats-coupe-3Surprising no one, the 2015 Cadillac ATS Coupe made its world debut in Detroit on Tuesday at the North American International Auto Show. While it may not have been the most exciting reveal at the show, it was damn well done. Cadillac also debuted a new, wreathless emblem, as well as hinting that a Cadillac ATS wagon and droptop could be in the works too.

The subtraction of two doors from the ATS is a natural move, as the last-generation Cadillac CTS Coupe accounted for as much as 25% of CTS sales in later years. Some people just prefer two doors to four, and even though these doors are rather heavy, the two-door ATS really grabs your attention. But Cadillac engineers did more than just remove a couple of doors and call it a day.

2015-cadillac-ats-coupe-2Even though the Cadillac ATS Coupe shares the same dimensions as the sedan, the roofline has been raked back to give it sportier look. While that means sacrificing some rear headroom, it’s not like most of us are ever going to be passengers in our own car – am I right? The ATS Coupe also has unique rear fenders and trunklid to go along with the different roofline, and a front fascia that differs juuuust enough.

Under the hood, the 2.0 liter four-cylinder turbo engine gets a 14% torque increase, bringing output to 295 pound-feet, though the 272 horsepower rating remains the same as last year’s model. Meanwhile the 3.6 liter V6 stays the course with 321 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque, while delivering a more linear acceleration profile.

You can’t go wrong with either engine though, as both return great fuel economy and the 2.0 turbo can even be had with a six-speed manual transmission, an increasingly rare option, especially among luxury car makers.

Inside, you’ll have Cadillac’s instinctive CUE infotainment system at your finger tips, while you sit in supportive and comfortable seats. Everything has a premium feel to it when you touch it, and you can tell that Cadillac has really stepped up the quality of their interiors. This car really does feel like a competitor for any luxury coupe out of Germany.

But if the ATS Coupe just isn’t practical or open enough for you, take heart, as Cadillac’s chief executive told Automotive News that other body styles, including a wagon and convertible, were also under consideration. Cadillac hasn’t offered a convertible since the Corvette-based XLR was punted, and with the ATS aiming to take on the popular BMW 3-series, a droptop option could lure buyers away from the German rivals.

Cadillac-LogoIt would definitely open up a whole new segment of buyers (i.e. women) who are looking for a sporty convertible to enjoy the summertime sun. As far as the ATS Wagon goes, it presents far more versatility than either the Coupe or sedan models, for growing families, long road trips, or just a field trip to Restoration Hardware to pick up a $2,000 coffee table. Car buyers love to have options, and it doesn’t cost GM much to shave off a few doors or add a long roof to the ATS.

The 2015 Cadillac ATS Coupe does more than just give Cadillac a second coupe option, as the ATS Coupe is the first to wear a redesigned, wreathless Cadillac emblem. Its the seventh evolution, and 38th variant of the Cadillac emblem, and is described as part of an ongoing evolution of the Art + Science design language, replacing a design that debuted in the year 2000. It’s lower and sleeker than the design it replaces, and will begin appearing on production cars in the second half of 2014.

While not the most exciting announcement, it leaves the door open for the debut of a more-powerful V variant of the ATS later on in the year. Keep your fingers crossed…
