After the boys at GMMG had their way with the LS1, power jumped up from 325 HP to a then eye-opening 381.
The Intimidator Camaro SS is a unicorn among the late-model GM contingent. For for only three model years, it delivered all of the goods you’d find in a standard Camaro SS, but with a bit more power, a bit more finesse, and quite a lot more exclusivity. They were commissioned by GMMG, a tuning company that worked closely with General Motors to turn the dial on mainstream 325 HP ram air-equipped F-bodies to 11.
You may have heard of the Blackbird Firebirds, Dick Harrell Edition ZL1’s, the Berger Camaros, and so on. Those were all built by GMMG, and the Intimidator SS is one of those special cars. GMMG was so on top of things back then that Dale Earnhardt wanted to get involved building collectible, one-off Camaros. After some prodding from his oldest son, Kerry, and after a few calls to former GM exec Scott Settlemire had been made, he was in the game.
From the front to the back, the Earnhardt Camaro 'intimidates' the competition.
What made the Intimidator stand out from a typical SS? Several things, really. Apart from some cosmetic change that included a set of American Racing 200S wheels, custom embroidery on the seats, special badging and engine horsepower callouts on the ram air scoop, the LS1 found under the hoods of these cars were typically bumped up from 320-325 HP to 381 HP. Sometimes even more if the customer had some extra cash burning a hole in his pocket…
The power boost came from nothing more than a chambered exhaust system, a high-flowing air lid and filter, and custom tuning. Sometimes it’s still hard to believe how well these old F-bodies respond to a few simple mods like that.
We found this one on eBay earlier, and it’s probably the most pristine example that we’ve ever seen. It should be – it only has 48 miles on its odometer. That’s not a typo. This is car number 43 out of 83 ever assembled, and it has seen very, very little street action since it was built twelve years ago. With a Buy-It-Now of $40k, is this the “new” 4th gen you’ve been looking for?
