In the Land Down Under, there is no Chevrolet; just Holden. GM’s Aussie-based subsidiary, which has a long and impressive performance history. GM has even sought to bring its most popular model, the Commodore, to America several times, first as the Pontiac G8 and now as the Chevy Caprice PPV.

With the 25th anniversary of the performance-oriented Holden Special Vehicles now here, GM and Holden have decided now is the time to release a special edition vehicle to celebrate this landmark occasion. Thus comes the announcement that Holden will sell limited quantities of the Commodore-based HSV GTS, a balls-to-the-wall performance sedan.

The HSV GTS has the venerable 435 horsepower 6.2 liter LS3 V8 engine under the bonnet which runs on either premium gasoline or, interestingly enough, Liquified Petroleum Gas, better known as propane. Yup, you can get a propane-powered Australian muscle sedan…just not in America.

Other special additions include unique 20-inch forged alloy wheels with a satin graphite finish and special “Vector” hood scoops to set it apart from more pedestrian Commodores. The Commodore also comes with the Enhanced Driver Interface system, which is basically an onboard performance computer used to record data like 0-60 times.

It’s a special car to be sure, and one that few people will be able to buy or even afford. While pricing hasn’t been announced, just 140 HSV GTS sedans will be built. Exclusivity does have its privileges…
